The road so far…
The silent treatment I get from UMT is deafening. It’s been nearly two weeks since I raised the concern about how UMT allowed their school to be a playground for academic fraud. All they could come up with is an article (without confirming my side).
As expected they washed their hands off by saying there is no dispute between me and the school. Apparently, that’s only applicable after I properly resigned from work. However, failing at addressing the issue on academic fraud, hosting an event with my logo, blocking my emails, and being silent only to allow the issue to die, how can that not become grounds for dispute. UMT claims that they are for justice, yet their actions are screaming otherwise.
I’d like to emphasize – the book is one thing (Jane included, no problem). The USFD, as a brand, is another issue as this is another intellectual property.
Fact: the reason why the program, sport management, exists at UMT is because of the PhD diploma of Jane. So, kicking out Jane, the program will cease to exist – students and parents will be affected by this change. However, if they keep Jane, the program can continue. UMT has to find a way to increase enrolment. I doubt that given their reputation and other serious issues surrounding the department. This program is unsustainable because they only have the credentials of a fraud to keep their program running. Whatever the case is- UMT is on an existential crisis.
Another issue – I am disadvantaged because I’m foreigner. I know that Vietnam is a socialist republic and the collective patriotism’s default is to trust and protect your own. I believe they used this to their advantage when they pointed out that Oliver is a Filipino in the article. I hope people here can dismiss that – this is not about nationality. It’s a case of a school supporting a fraud to steal authorship in broad daylight. I did not rally my people to attack. It’s all me supported by Vietnamese and Filipino academics who feel what I feel.
The fact remains. I completed two books before joining UMT on September 2023. Book 1 has just been published. Book 2 will be published next year. For Book 2 Jane’s name will not appear. I don’t care if it is published on Routledge or any other publications out there.
Moreover, I was manipulated to relinquishing the first authorship under the pretense that Jane was my friend. After the revelation, several attempts to shut me off using threats were made. I’ve been accused of extortion – for asking Jane to pay for all the work and sleepless nights I took for more than 2 years. I was accused of blackmailing Jane for exposing her (which was bound to happen). They tried schemes to steal the drafts and evidences. Finally, all my socials were recently hacked, along with other students at UMT. Im not accusing who, but the timing and the people who were hacked simultaneously on the same day as me is suspicious.
The revelation that Jane purchased 500 books from Routledge and selling it at 500% mark up is also adding to the controversy. Jane and her partner Tacy are not giving up on the claim because they will lose so much profit. By the way, 250 books are still in Singapore. Unfortunately, I’m against this practice. I did not write that book to make profit but to contribute to my profession.
Lastly, Jane understood that the letter from Routledge is not an official title “first Vietnamese” in sports science to publish. This is unverified and should have only been used for marketing purposes – not official title. She did not write a single letter on the book in the first place, which further invalidates that claim. Jane needs to update her definition of “authorship” as she seems to have an operational definition that only she can understand.
